Sunday Set Invite

The Sunday of the Culture Days weekend, I will travel with my uke to the magical art space created in the forest by friends.

I know it has come along amazingly since I first heard about the project...  I think of it as a semi permanent, environmentally sensitive art installation in nature.  I can't wait to see what's been done, and what will take place on site.

I am going to work on a new uke song inspired by the place, the beautiful, magical, St. Ignatius.

If I am permetted, I have one sing-along-song original I want to bring for the birds, and wanted to get as many people to sing along as possible, so I can make up new melodies for the birdlike Love-call chorus.  With any luck I'll get some audio or video recording of it...

Here's the details from an earlier blog.

September 27, 2011 Minutes ~ SAC Guelph Regional Writers Group Meeting

Here's Peter and Shannon in Sunny Acres Park, getting ready to serenade the Plowshare CSA members as they pick up their locally grown organic veggies.

These pick up park jams have had amazing weather!  Every Tuesday in August and September the weather permitted us to enjoy creating music together, just outdoors and in public, from about 4 til 7.

This week the set list something like this:
Hedley cover song, Shannon
Dance the Night Away, Peter
Love Call, Kim
and then bits of Where There's Smoke, a Michelle Shocked cover with kid count to 10 part
Pretty Pink Thunderstorm, Shannon
Young Old Man, Peter followed by
bits of Shady Lady, and then,

Let it Be, Beatles cover lead by Diane
Here Comes the Sun, cover, also Diane
Puff The Magic Dragon, cover, Diane
and then the canning tomatoes original tune of Shannon's....

Look who might have heard some of all this ~ the local GREEN party candidate, who will be at the GYMC later for a food focused talk:
and a guy appearing at Manhattan's on Monday!

Plowshare Pick Up Park Jam/Guelph Regional Writers Group

You know we've been meeting Tuesdays 5-7, in Sunny Acres Park right?

Mostly we are an informal gathering of varying levels of singers and musicians.  We make music together, and try and include everyone and mutually share musical knowledge and encouragement, as we go around in the circle taking turns leading or choosing tunes...

Your originals are welcome.  Printed copies of them are welcome...  We will be delighted to try and play along as well as to give you feedback on the song itself!

In fact, we try and encourage songwriters to do at least 60% original material in their performance in this public place, so as to be eligible to apply for the CIRA Groundbreaker Microgrants at the end of the month!

Here's the original invite with some other details.  Hope to see/hear you there!

Open Stage Thoughts...

I love a Sunday nite sit down at a drum kit, and you can do that at the Nate's Open Stage at the Jimmy Jazz.  You can also borrow his electric guitar, which can be very fun...  Last nite I took a spot and made an effort with Miss Ohio, and Rocky Spine.  How are you supposed to practice with an electric otherwise, if you don't have one, ha.  I had fun, despite not really being able to remember all the words blah blah blah.

I also think the guy on the list after me, Ian, has agreed to bring his drum kit and electric guitar for six weeks to the eBar on Tuesdays starting in November, if I can get the open stage going there...

Jerome, Ontario

Am Bm Am E
blue screws, covered bridge, mouldy house on fire in the burbs
Am F Am E
haven't loved in this town yet but i've shared a bed, with fear

of ghosts, the mob, terrorists. and boiler about to explode
while wishes blow by, blossom flurries like snow

CHORUS:
E A G E
its been too long
E A G E
since i was safe and strong
G E
i'm here righting many wrongs
G E
finally home, in jerome

bank robber bullets i flew, fearing police
now canaries duck hummingbirds in the buzzing of bees

black beauty, brown betty, pony in the herd
donkey, you and me, still waiting on your word.

"I was hardcore today, suggesting folks rewrite lyrics so as to have more lines that better describe the scene: touch, smell, sound, taste, colour, props (such as painting on the wall or furniture), and locations. And no, I didn't play. I think at least half the work of improving songwriting is listening, ha." -- Kim L

also note: audio & video were collected at the meeting and we welcome volunteer editors, especially for segments intended for CFRU documentary.

Ignatius Forest Project, Culture Days

A collaborative, multidisciplinary arts project blending spoken word, dance, visual art and music in a forest setting. The work and presentation of it will take place in a woodland corridor on the grounds of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, which is widely recognized as a hub of spirituality and environmental sustainability in the Guelph area. Ignatius Forest Project: Hallowed Ground will bring together a number of participants - artists and non-artists, dancers, photographers, musicians, poets, and others - to create a happening in the woods.

Kim Logue is offering a 3 song set of original music featuring the trees and birds, because participants are encouraged to contribute to the project based on inspiration, insights and reflections derived from spending time at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre -- and particularly in its extensive forests.

She also wants to help the project and centre with trail development, clean-up and other work.

What do you want to do to participate and contribute?

More from the Jazz Festival!

Evelyn Lavoie got my xylophone into the the Guelph Mercury!

Lullabies for a Sleepless City, by Louisa Krátká & Evelyne Lavoie
in the Guelph Jazz Festival Nuit Blanche
Sept 10th @ 11:30pm - Douglas Alleyway near Red Brick (25min set)
Sept 11th @ 1:30am - 10Carden (45 min set)

Lullabies for a Sleepless City featured soft voices, plucked strings and gentle noisemakers, looped and layered into delicate, improvised nocturnes that explore the city's circadian rhythms. They aim to soothe the city's nervous system, blur the streak of car lights in the darkness and shush the passing whir of engines into urban slumber.  Violinist and vocalist Louisa Krátká and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Evelyne Lavoie first met in 2007 during a workshop of R. Murray Schafer's Patria 7: Asterion, where they discovered their common interests in modal melodies, poetic ambiances and environmental issues. Lullabies for a Sleepless City presents the fruits of their exploration into each others' worlds.

Christine Duncan's Element Choir Project, Guelph 09/11

many photos by Lewis Melville
The Guelph incarnation of the Element Choir was augmented by Guelph vocalists, including Tannis Slimmon, Shannon Kingsbury, Louisa Kratka, Evelyn Lavoie and Kim Logue, who workshopped with Christine Duncan in order to learn her inspiring conducting system for improvising singers.

"i couldn't tell that you had no idea what's going on." cd

With these extraordinary sonic resources in these capable hands, the Element Choir was a spectacular experience, a joyful celebration of the human voice in creative music.

The loops, patterns, sound memories I learned to make were totally amazing.  The whole experience was amazing...

"are you ready for your solo?" ss

"What a fantastic experience!  I do hope that we can do it again sometime." ts

first ever sound check?

Sept. 7-11, 2011.

Critically acclaimed, award winning festival presenting innovative jazz and creative improvised music in a community setting.

Tues Sept 13, Park Jam/Guelph Regional Writers Group SAC Meeting

Shannon played us a brand new one about someone else canning tomatoes and grumpy moods, ha.  My other fave of hers was the one about Dufferin Grove Park, which she played for us by request.

The audience and participant turn out is getting smaller now that its colder, but we were lucky about the rain, and about a brand new concert uke player from out of town!

Do you think fiction writer and 2011 Winner of Leacock Medal for Humour, Trevor Cole might ever be convinced to come out again?

Evolution?

Here's a bit of what I was working on this weekend.  Its rough folks, but its called "Christmas Trees" written the first time I left G-town for a horse gig down south.  Do you have suggestions or feedback?  I am still trying to keep the beat, vary the melody more and keep all the revised words in order. ha. Also, I need a haircut and a skirt eh? And, I forgot a whole early verse...
"the live oaks have their spanish moss
and holly leaves have hickory
i'm lost alone in a strange woods
could he.... be missing me?"
