This was the first night the venue had it set up just for us, with no complications around our start time. I counted about 35 folks in the bar at once, at the busiest time. We raised a tiny bit of money for the L&M charity effort for KIDSLink.

"I played a cover song while we worked out sound check tests and such. Weightless Again by the Handsome Family. I meant to introduce this first song by saying that I LIKE to include cover songs at a songwriters open stage, and maybe even talk about some of the song structure or the chord change I don't have down yet, ha, etc. If it wasn't a mini stage, I would have wanted to invite other musicians to join in...

And, I meant also to mention that if I ever ask someone to work on the tune with me they eventually YELL at me for it because the song is so sad. So, I wanted to do it all the way through once where no one will interrupt or stop me, ha.

Even without listening back to the cfru-device recorded audio, I know I wasn't effective in asking for feedback on these things. I also lost the nerve to ask if the song is too politically incorrect to be performed in public or what.

The we did Love Call, uke style and everyone sang along and pretended they liked it! Yay, team!!

And then I borrowed an electric guitar, because its fun to, and Peter Light's kindness that evening allowed it, and I did The Way The World Turns, with imaginary solos from other musicians ha.

Don filled in as host of the recent Guelph Regional Writers Group Meeting. He set up his amp in the green room and the festivities went from there!

"We used the Green Room because the stage was set up for the B-Bop event and the patrons weren't really going to dig the singer-songwriters. It made for a suitably intimate evening which is what I was going for."

The Man of Steel once again had not only postered, and promoted, but he collected email addresses on the sign up sheet and sent in some other notes for the minutes...

Description (PROJECT GOALS AND EXPECTED RESULTS):

The funding is requested as support for the completion of recordings for a 3 song demo. With the guidance, support and magic of a gifted producer to help oversee and coordinate enhanced musicality of 4 tunes penned by a lifetime poet and natural singer. Most of the budget would be directed to Bob Wiseman's time to mix and fix it all up, although payments for muscians is also important.

For sure I can demonstrate leadership, and decision-making skills, but I need help in the making of actual music. In general, I hope to record the music as I perform it, perhaps adding my own supplementary vocals, and also adding many instrumental parts. I like a deadline and a limited budget because it helps drive and shape my creativity, and I don't forsee any discomfort with constraints vs. aspirations or dreams.

My proposed producer, Bob Wiseman, will help me make decisions to make a good sounding recording, efficiently and within budget, while taking responsibility for decisions regarding the final mix. I also feel comforted to think he will do any arranging to compose any required music by other musicians while we get to hang out and have fun.

I want to re-record this with a stronger, more even timing, longer instrumental breaks and other improvements. Does it have enough words? Does it sound done? I will welcome refinements suggested by music teachers, musicians supporting the project as well as the producer's thoughts!

> Awkward Silences
This tune, posted on myspace, also needs to be re-recoded because verse lyrics have been reworked so the story is more clearly told. I also play it on uke now, why not record it that way? It should be re-done with Aimee/2Trishes on harmonies on the chorus and an instrumental bridge before the 2nd chorus. Awkward silences in the song are to be poetically awkward and NOT musically correct.

The kooky singalong chorus should have a variety of surprising sounds, rhythms and melodies like the bird calls that day. (Think vocal jam. kids & tuesday crowd. Think Evenine choir? could i bring in a field recording?) I think this is a good tune to package up for kids!

Overall I think the turn out was pretty good for an event that had only 6 posters put up, day of. The email was sent to the distribution list day of. And, someone made the point that I didn't get it in all my ususal event listings. Is it really time already to talk about booking in January? If so, then let us please take the songwriters club to a monthly meeting, ha.

JamSchool is a wonderful place to experience a songwriters session!

The first hour and a half of the workshop was very insightful. About 26 people attended, of all ages, including non-songwriters, that were very interested in the tips and tricks our expert shared.

The "Open Stage" section of the Wendell Ferguson workshop was jam packed! Next time I think we will reserve about half the number of spots, in advance. As it was, 10 performers received a brief review from our celebrity guest!

Kim Logue has walked a very strange road to be where she is. A mostly self-taught multi-media artist, she hails from a business background. Her first short film (set in her travelling fibre arts studio), recently screened at Guelph's 2011 International Festival of Moving Media. She has published song lyrics in literary anthologies, while managing/promoting other musicians. An award winning broadcast journalist and producer of the syndicated hoofbeats! radio show founded at 93.3 FM in Guelph, she has also emceed at Hillside Folk Festival. As well as working on her own original songs, she puts some powerful voice coaching to work singing in a few choirs. Kim also hosts songwriting workshops, teaches beginner uke classes and dabbles in guitar, while aspiring to play piano and drums...

SNAP Guelph - Plowshare Pick Up Park Jam

Members of the CSA Plowshare have their veggie pick-up every Tuesday afternoon in Sunny Acres Park. Lately, they've been bringing along their musical instruments and songs for "Veggie Pick-up Park Jams." When SNAP dropped by, singer/songwriter and provincial NDP candidate James Gordon was picking up his organic veggies - he's also a CSA member! He played a new song he's recently recorded, called "Jack's Dream", based on Jack Layton's final letter to Canadians. Very moving. Check it out on YouTube!

Sunday Set Invite

The Sunday of the Culture Days weekend, I will travel with my uke to the magical art space created in the forest by friends.

I know it has come along amazingly since I first heard about the project... I think of it as a semi permanent, environmentally sensitive art installation in nature. I can't wait to see what's been done, and what will take place on site.

I am going to work on a new uke song inspired by the place, the beautiful, magical, St. Ignatius.

If I am permetted, I have one sing-along-song original I want to bring for the birds, and wanted to get as many people to sing along as possible, so I can make up new melodies for the birdlike Love-call chorus. With any luck I'll get some audio or video recording of it...

Plowshare Pick Up Park Jam/Guelph Regional Writers Group

You know we've been meeting Tuesdays 5-7, in Sunny Acres Park right?

Mostly we are an informal gathering of varying levels of singers and musicians. We make music together, and try and include everyone and mutually share musical knowledge and encouragement, as we go around in the circle taking turns leading or choosing tunes...

Your originals are welcome. Printed copies of them are welcome... We will be delighted to try and play along as well as to give you feedback on the song itself!

In fact, we try and encourage songwriters to do at least 60% original material in their performance in this public place, so as to be eligible to apply for the CIRA Groundbreaker Microgrants at the end of the month!

Open Stage Thoughts...

I love a Sunday nite sit down at a drum kit, and you can do that at the Nate's Open Stage at the Jimmy Jazz. You can also borrow his electric guitar, which can be very fun... Last nite I took a spot and made an effort with Miss Ohio, and Rocky Spine. How are you supposed to practice with an electric otherwise, if you don't have one, ha. I had fun, despite not really being able to remember all the words blah blah blah.

I also think the guy on the list after me, Ian, has agreed to bring his drum kit and electric guitar for six weeks to the eBar on Tuesdays starting in November, if I can get the open stage going there...

Ignatius Forest Project, Culture Days

A collaborative, multidisciplinary arts project blending spoken word, dance, visual art and music in a forest setting. The work and presentation of it will take place in a woodland corridor on the grounds of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, which is widely recognized as a hub of spirituality and environmental sustainability in the Guelph area. Ignatius Forest Project: Hallowed Ground will bring together a number of participants - artists and non-artists, dancers, photographers, musicians, poets, and others - to create a happening in the woods.

Kim Logue is offering a 3 song set of original music featuring the trees and birds, because participants are encouraged to contribute to the project based on inspiration, insights and reflections derived from spending time at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre -- and particularly in its extensive forests.

She also wants to help the project and centre with trail development, clean-up and other work.

Lullabies for a Sleepless City featured soft voices, plucked strings and gentle noisemakers, looped and layered into delicate, improvised nocturnes that explore the city's circadian rhythms. They aim to soothe the city's nervous system, blur the streak of car lights in the darkness and shush the passing whir of engines into urban slumber. Violinist and vocalist Louisa Krátká and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Evelyne Lavoie first met in 2007 during a workshop of R. Murray Schafer's Patria 7: Asterion, where they discovered their common interests in modal melodies, poetic ambiances and environmental issues. Lullabies for a Sleepless City presents the fruits of their exploration into each others' worlds.

The workshop welcomes songwriters, and non-performing audience members as well.

The Story of Our July 2011 Meeting at Hillside, Day 1

Matt played a song called "Enough" on the Guelph Guitar. The main stage was quite loud, so it was hard to hear all the lyrics clearly, but the message was moving, his voice was great and the groove on the guitar worked nicely too! He's requested email about future meetings because he hopes to attend again.

Some celebrities even joined our acoustic song circle! Here's Ryan, who presented the workshop just before and Aimee, who we mentioned would be playing with Shannon at the Island stage the very next day at 5pm!

Can you imagine standing up and sharing your original tune accapela? That's what one brave songwriter pictured here did.

Another song circle attendee stood with the borrowed guitar and shared a country song she'd workshopped in many high profile arenas, including EMI staff, and yet she got feedback from us that she'd never heard before, from unique poetic interpretations to a surprising challenge to some strengthen so-called "filler lines."

Not EVERYone had an original they could perform for us... but, they enjoyed sharing their feedback AND adding their powerful voices to many sing-a-long choruses!

Acoustic Songwriting Session host Kim Logue, invites Hillside guests to share their original music during the festival. Feedback from fellow participants and other listeners will be provided in this collaborative Songwriters in the Round. When I saw you last I mentioned that I knew two women who were very keen to apply to be regional volunteer coordinators for SAC in Guelph. They are Jane and Kim.

They are keen to learn and to teach and to include others in their passion. I've been amazed at how well they organize events and concerts and entire seasons of workshops: They “facilitate". They just make things work. They're also both extremely supportive of others who are trying out songs for the first time.

Kim works for me. She is a creative and relentless marketer, she is spirited, she is infectious in her enthusiasm for whatever she gets behind, and she is ever-smiling.

I can't recommend Kim and Jane enough. I think SAC would be well served by these two. They'd do you proud.

I have known Kim Logue for over four years through our mutual invotvement at CFRU 93.3fm, Guelph’s Campus Community Radio Station.

Kim Logue likes to say that moving to Guelph made her musical, because she had her first song lyric published in an Anthology called Guelph Speaks - and had another song recorded in the companion compilation CD. l heard her perform the tunes live on CFRU twice beforehand and again at the launch party in the Guelph Youth Music Centre (which was also broadcast on 93.3fm) and can say she was charming, composed and radiant in all appearances. Kim has also appeared on my own community-focused show, Royal City Rag, in a singer-songwriter capacity.

At CFRU, Kim was the founder and guiding iight behind a radio show called hoofbeats, that is syndicated/simulcast on two NCRA stations and that boasted a herd of more than a dozen motivated helpers, by the time she received the Media of the Year Award from the National Sport Office, Equine Canada.

She has also been a hard-working volunteer member of the Programming Committee, and attended many CFRU board meetings with the intention of making the organization more productive, positive and community focused.

l have always found Kim to be consistent, organized and fair. I am confident she would embrace tolerance and open-mindedness, while addressing the concerns of SAC-Guelph Writers Group members, answering questions and facilitating activities, with total professionalism. For sure I can demonstrate leadership, and decision-making skills, but throughout this process I will invite the experience of the other people on the project, especially in regards to arrangements and recording methods, not mention the making of actual music. I am confident in my ability to deliver soulful vocal emotion from fragile whisper to full volume, and would like to experiment with overdubs and harmonies and such.

In general, I hope to record the music as I perform it, adding supplementary vocal and instrumental parts. I like a deadline and a limited budget because it helps drive and shape my creativity, and I don't forsee any discomfort with constraints vs. aspirations or dreams.

My proposed producer, Bob Wiseman, will help me make decisions to make a good sounding recording, efficiently and within budget, while taking responsibility for decisions regarding the final mix. I also feel comforted to think he will do any arranging to compose any required music by other musicians while we get to hang out and have fun.

My proposed engineer, John Dinsmore creates a comfortable vibe whereever he happens to be and I would gladly let him select, set up and operate the equipment, not to mention as many instruments as possible ha, in his studio. I also wish for his involvement to help organize and direct sessions, especially among the musicians. I wouldn't mind if he wanted to try and correct musical errors or make aesthetic judgements...

Verse lyrics have been reworked so the story is more clearly told. Needs to be recorded with Girl Jam harmonies on the chorus and an instrumental bridge before the 2nd chorus. Awkward silences in the song are to be poetically awkward and NOT musically correct.

The kooky singalong chorus should have a variety of surprising sounds, rhythms and melodies like the bird calls that day. (Think vocal jam. Think Evenine choir? could i bring in a field recording?)

This digital demo project will allow a new focus on the artist/songwriter on ukulele, and piano. Tracks to work on will include the never before recorded Lifestory, the group collaboration song Hey Sister, as well as a corrected/reworked Lovecall and revised Awkward Silences. Since fine-tuning the latter two lyrically, we will improve upon the musicality and production qualities and instrumentation of the two tracks previously recorded in support of my application to the Songwriters Association of Canada to be a Volunteer Coordinator of Guelph Regional Writers Group Meetings.

The digital files can be shared on-line to facebook and myspace friends, for feedback on the demo will be collected and measured via social networking strategy. I am also going to draw on the expert guidance of the producer and engineer, in consideration that future manufacturing for a real release can be considered…

With some recent acting experience, and some powerful voice coaching under her belt, she sings in several choirs, teaches beginner uke and dabbles in guitar while aspiring to play piano...

Music is a magical place to pour sorrow and find joy. Singing heals, and songs change the world. Songs play a spiritual and intellectual role in society, of profound and lasting benefit to humanity, as well as to the individual creator. Sometimes I am still surprised to realize I have become a songwiter!

I was a Creative Writing major in first year university and somehow got swept away in the Management Training program of a major bank. I reinvented myself as an artist after a successful 15 year career in the financial services industry. I persue my art the way I vote, diligently with thought, research and any required hard work put into it. I do it with gratitude that I am able to; and with the intent to make my voice heard, to make my mark in society, and to do my bit to improve the world, ha...

I also write as my own personal therapy and to find out what I think!

To connect to an audience, I will continue to find unique venues and celebrity guests for the increasing number of song circle events. I will play my original songs at upcoming uke workshops at Long and McQuade. I will busk, attend open stages, including the Tranzac’s Composer’s workshop and seek opening gigs. The relationships I plan to develop also include tours of some recording studios of profile including Bob Wiseman’s at the Tranzac and John Dinsmore’s called Lincoln County.

The final project will be different from the submitted audio examples in that the musicality will be improved, enhanced and more diverse. Through the investment of time, care and attention on behalf of the artist, as well as the investment of expertise and talent from a growing community of musicians and co-writers, song structures are expected to become more intriguing and more interesting, with more variety tune to tune as well as more proficient musicianship even in solo performances.

Audio Support Material

These two tracks are recent recordings of original material. The first recording is the first time I have tried to play my own guitar instead of relying on more established players, and, basic as it sounds, it marks a progression in confidence and ability. The second tune is audio extracted from a laptop video, documenting a group songwriting exercise, live off the floor. It’s also included for its timeline and for its illustration of the direction of the project, in terms of the progression as a musician and specifically in the related ability to collaborate with other more proficient musicians, as well as the use SAC meetings to create whole new tunes during a meeting.

The project that will be completed with this grant includes the creation of a minimum of 7 new songs, a “Home Street” songbook. The new tunes may reflect the access to a piano after August 1 and are to compliment existing catalogue towards a full length album for recording fall 2012. The grant will cover living expenses as well as artistic costs such as music lessons, choir costs and band practice. Milestone events are to include the SAC Guelph Regional Writer’s group meetings, which will be ramped up to meet every other week Sept- November 2011. Once a month we will do a songwriters in the round with feedback and once a month we will work on a group song. I will also be seeking bandmates as co-writers and in support of aspirations for recordings and gigs in future.

Q3a) The impact on the art form, specifically on these project songs is a chance to incorporate recent and future feedback from Regional Writer’s Group Meetings. Suggestions on where to add a bridge, finetune and/or add verses so that each story is more clearly told, as well as learning to take a verse up an octave and/or learn to sing harmony parts for a chorus. Piano, mandolin and uke will feature as main instruments for the first time. The impact on community will include more collaborating with fellow musicians and seeking bandmates to enhance the complexity and quality of the overall musicianship. The impact of the grant on myself as an artist will be similar to the impact of the recently received royalty cheque, that reinstated my belief that songs can make money. Also note that I will gladly acknowledge OAC’s support by placing the OAC logo on all printed promotional material such as press releases, programs and websites. The impact of this is added credibility to my endeavours as a songwriter.

Notes from the Winterfolk Song Evaluation

The SAC is an organization for songwriters, run by songwriters. Ania is very brave. I think it would be nice to see the lyrics overhead at these events like we do at the Wheatley/Gordon songwriting workshops. Perhaps the host could provide more background or intro of each of the participating songwriters?

Here are a few thoughts I left with:

It is safer in the folk world than pop. A publisher needs to tailor each pitch, between arguments with lawyers. A producer can be a handholder. Someone you hire because you'll respect their opinion. (But then you disregard it anyway, ha) The first guy's song had a long pause before the chorus and gaps between lines, giving one the "better be good" feeling… They set aside the state of the art production in other cases and looked hard at the lyric, listening hard to the vocal. (using phrases like tuning corrections? pitchy?)

Important ways a song earns $$$

1) Reproduction rights (mechanical)

2) Performance rights (SOCAN, live, tv, radio, video games etc.)

3) Sychronisation rights (film, ads, t.v.games. is this a one time liscence fee?)

4) Print (sheet music)

First of all, at these things they only seem to look at the words. That bababa baby is only about the melody and sing along fun. People love it. But I couldn't take an evaluation from those folks in a room that big like that. Why did I even put one in the box?

SONG FOR OTHERS

Over a period of four weeks in February and April 2011, Canadian artist Ehryn Torrell and Swiss artist Annelore Schneider (of collectif_fact) have been developing a collaborative residency project in Guelph. Their project explores ideas of home, intimacy and vulnerability through communal activities like playing with snow, walking, conversing, communal teas, sound recordings, blogging and public broadcasts. Through planned public events as well as chance encounters, Torrell and Schneider are forming relationships with people in Guelph, aiming to create a bond that allows for trust, exchange and risk-taking.

Torrell + Schneider's main project, Song for Others, is a sound piece created from over 60 recordings of Guelph residents singing for someone else. The songs were not recorded as "performances" or "dedications," but rather as a re-creation of actual events, a time each participant sang to change someone's mood, calm them to sleep, or simply to make them laugh. From these recordings, they have created a sound piece that will be broadcast live THIS THURSDAY APRIL 21, 2011!

Wednesday March 9, 7-9pm at Folkway Music, was our first time writing a full tune together, from the ground up.

"After hosting these meetings for almost two years, and rarely even taking a turn in the song circle, I was honoured that folks would get behind My Mission that day. They were all so willing to offer their talent and effort on a project that I really wanted to execute...

We wrote a song for my sister's birthday and skyped it to her, and the friends she was out for dinner with, in St, Louis, at the conclusion of our writing session. It was awesome!

"It doesn't matter what you think, it's what the audience thinks!" Rick Levine has a radio background and experience as a recording artist. He will present information from his Music Entrepreneurs Seminars about protecting your copyright, music licensing and performance royalties.

Are you a musician with a day job? Don't give the tax man a free lunch! Have some fun with Ross Durfey, a local accountant who will discuss the feasibility of treating your music as self-employment, even if you aren't yet generating much profit. He is on the Hillside Finance Committee and comes highly recommended by a client list that's a who's who of the local music scene.

Kim Logue is a natural promoter, able to develop artists and guide them to improve their bottom line. As the Volunteer Coordinator for the Guelph Regional Writers Group, she facilitates feedback for performers in a monthly song circle ~ to instigate collaboration. She will facilitate a discussion about managing your fan base and also wants to discuss the idea of continually having something new to sell! Will any recording studio experts join in the discussion?

HOLIDAY DANCE PARTY

was my table topic, this morning so I did a commercial for the Diggers Christmas Concert and for Hillside (which should be a holiday).

The speech I had to evaluate was called "The Birth Partner" and I commended the speaker for his pre-home-birth-planning as the husband/father/birth partner in the home birth I was lucky enough to be present for was soooooooooooooooooooo ILL (non) prepared. I also suggested that they were in it together for whatever the universe has in store for them (vs. speaker's perspective of his job being to support his wife in the birth she desires) and was a little surprised when ppl laughed. And the General Evaluator said that the the suggestions I made to the speaker about his presentation skills were two pieces of good advice... I was glad I actually hauled myself out of bed on time to make it to the meeting!

TABLE TOPICS MASTER ROLE:

When introduced, you walk up smartly to the lectern at the front, smile and shake right hands with the Chair person. When he/she is seated, you address "Chair, Toastmasters and Guests" and say your brief introductory piece.

If the Chair has not said these things already, tell us (making necessary changes to fit your TableTopic plan):
"You have less than a minute to prepare.The goal is to have an "opening", a thought or two, and an "ending" within one minute. When finished, we vote for the best presentation. The winner gets a Trophy -- to keep for the rest of the meeting. You will receive an envelope with topics in it...
Guests should feel free to take a topic, look for a good one, or just pass it on if they would rather not speak. Speakers and Evaluators have the privilege of passing.

No-one should pick a topic until the person next to them has stood up to speak -- so everyone will have the same time to prepare.

The Timer will turn on the "green" light at 30 seconds, the "amber" light at 45 seconds and the "red" stop light at 60 seconds -- when we will applaud.

Use the word of the week a few times and you may earn two trophies!"

There are many variations in how to do Table Topics.

One way is to write the topics on small pieces of paper and put them all in an open box or envelope for easy access. If the topics are not folded it is easier for people to "peek" at several before they take one. This is a mixed blessing.

Another way is to have a big bag of objects (or envelope of picture clippings) which apply to the meeting Theme and ask people to pull one out to talk about.

Hand around a book or dictionary. Have us open it at random, announce the first significant word on the top left page, and speak on it.

The title of my speech today is Why Guelph?

I found myself here in mid May, for no other reason than the fact that I have always wanted for some reason to live here. I took the first apartment ad I found in the paper. And, I have been asking Why Guelph, of myself, and of other people ever since. And all the varying reasons I have accumulated are consistent in the fact that Guelph is great place to be!

Fellow Toastmasters,
The purpose of my speech today is to tell you Why Guelph for me.

1) The Arts and Music Community
How many people here have been to McClelland Art Centre?
I don’t know how many of you consider comics "art," but the proprietor of grooviest comic shop in all of Toronto was the one that told me Guelph has more comic book artists per capita than any other place he could think of.

2) The University. How many people saw the front page story on the Guelph Mercury last week where U of G was announced at the the top of Maclean’s list? My cousin got his phd from the University of Guelph, and in the course of his business he speaks to many, many horticultural professionals from around the world. I recently heard through him that University of Guelph graduates have a sincere and lifelong loyalty to their school that does not compare to students elsewhere. I myself have recently become associated with Equine Guelph, the world reknown part of the U of G, which is famous for its innovations, research and the association with the revolutionary vet techniques, in support of the health and welfare of horses, issues very close to my heart indeed. Just as a sidenote I am doing the grooming lesson you all helped me with at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and I want them to support a Horseweek presentation during horse week at Creativity Greenhouse on Suffolk St. next May.

3) Happy Hillside!To mark my 36th birthday, I attended Hillside Festival for the first time ever. The event at Guelph Lake on the Grant River Conservation Area offered cheap, veggie food and a relaxed and respectful attitude, between people and towards the environment – i loved the uniquely canadian, communal and genteel vibe. Sitting there on soft Ontario Green Grass, listening to the fiddle and the banjo, I decided “I am celebrating my birthday this way every year for the rest of my life” this very festival, on this exact conservation area. Hillside felt like home to me, like an event and a place I am connected to.

The modest half day of music was first conceived by a small group of friends and born on the Hillside farm site, and then moved to the banks of the Speed River at the Riverside Park bandshell. It has more than survived, it has thrived. i agree with the board member who said it is "delightfully difficult to tell one Hillside from the other: each year has people dancing, having fun, listening to great music, playing with children and eating good food.”

Sue Richards who was the first ever paid Hillside employee wrote: Weapon of mass love comes out of the closet. "A pivitol decision based on blind faith, a passion for live music and a love of Guelph." She now maintains Blogguelph and more recently said she was drawn here because Guelph is a hive of creative genius.

A Few More Hillside Facts:
The very first program was a single sheet photocopy folding in half stating “music celebration for all ages (noon – 11pm), and in in 1987 it moved to the island and became a 3 day event
in 1989 hillside was named as one reason Guelph is on the “top ten places to live in Canada”
1990 the first map from out of town was provided
1991 was the first year for poets and hat bands (draw to see who plays together)
in 1996 acoustic guitar magazine ranked hillside as one of the top festivals in NA
in 2000 hillsde released a cd, featuring live tracks, a sort of musical snapshot
in 2002 weekend passes sold out, and in 2003 Hillside launched on-line ticket sales. last year they sold out on line so fast it caught everybody off guard.

Toastmasters, volunteers need to check in March. And tickets go on sale May 1st. Although I also heard there might be a few up for grabs this Christmas....

"Well, I picked up Guelph quite randomly. I was sending applications to different universities across Canada for my graduate school. But somehow only the University of Guelph accepted me. I can't even find the place from a map of Canada that I bought from Shanghai. But when I first got here, I thought Woo, this is a place that I probably won't get tied of easily. I have been here for over 4 years now. Isn't that amazing?!"

"I choose Guelph as a lifestyle choice. In Toronto we realized if we wanted to buy a house we would have to work way too hard. I was also tired of the fast paced side of life and the constant traffic. I find people in Guelph friendlier and the community is more supportive and interested in the environment, arts and alternative health. All subjects near and dear to my heart."

"Away back at the beginning, I decided that I wanted to help charter a new Toastmasters Club. I asked District 60 for a lead and they suggested Peggy Nagle. I found that I met and worked with so many younger and interesting people here that I have belonged ever since. That means getting up at 5:15 am to drive from Georgetown AFTER getting up with five hours sleep. This is a wonderful bunch of people!"

"Why Guelph? The University. At first it was the distance between Guelph and my home. It was far enough that I didn't have to live at home, but close enough that if I want to go home I could. And the U of G isn't a huge university. My final choice was made after visiting campus and feeling the overall atmosphere--people were actually polite here."

"My answer to #1 is that I work here."

"I moved to Guelph quite by accident. My parents decided to move to a small town, thinking it would be a more beneficial place for three kids to grow up. At first, my schoolmates weren't friendly (they didn't like girls whose ambitions weren't getting married and making babies). These days, my small town has become somewhat more open-minded, and most girls who grow up there go on to college or university."

"Why Guelph? well... my mom went to university here, my two older sisters went to university here, i have family close by, so if i came here for school i wouldnt be as homesick... i wasn't, and now i live with my sister in guelph, so its even better!"

A Few Words on The New Designations in
Toastmasters International Education Program

There are two distinctly different but complementary tracks in Toastmasters progression, the Leadership Track and the Communication Track, and both have recently been renamed. Each track starts with a basic manual outlining a set of ten projects. At the end of the basic manual, you receive an official designation that you may use, and you may elect to have a letter sent to your employer regarding your newly acheived designation! The CMT is now known as the 'CC' or Competent Communicator designation and the leadership track gives you a 'CL' or Compentent Leader designation upon completion.

Once you have finished the basic manual, you can continue to improve your communication and leadership skills by working through the advanced manuals. Each advanced step along the way gives you a different designation and a different set of skills. All the building blocks work towards the coveted Distinguished Toastmaster Designation.

The Toastmasters we spoke to, however, are more concerned with what they learn from a set of manuals, practice and of course, the invaluable feedback of fellow Toastmasters. Members appreciate the learning and development that comes from the usual 25 personalized, written evaluations of each of their presentations, as well as the verbal evaluation that is delivered immediately, during the meeting.

"I've become a more confident communicator, relying less on those verbal crutches that so clutter our conversations. I've also been able to talk to co-workers in a more constructive, less judgmental fashion; more direct communications with others;

"Benefits in my TM designation? When I think of that question I think that if I put a CTM behind my name I would receive some recognition by the rest of the world. I haven't found that. For me it has been a journey of personal growth and learning. I have also made good friends and enjoy the supportive nature of the TM environment."

the evaluator today said i had too many facts and not enough emotion. he asked me beforehand if i had any personal stories in there and his evaluation then focused on THAT. i thought asking the audience to raise their hands if they were persuaded was a gr8 way to check the project objectives. he thought not everyone put up their hand, but i didn't notice WHO held out!

Q. how anti-kl-actual nature can a work get???

- one person said i was doing that question thing at the end of some of my statements. someone else suggested i wasn't dressed appropriately. someone else would have liked to hear more about the sources. someone called me kimmy-pot-pie, and said she was definitely on my super-hero sign up sheet by the end. someone else said less BUSH/USA and more Canadian content would have ensured that the audience didn't distance themselves from the problem. someone else said i need more eye contact and more vocal variety. the self-admitted right wing said she was convinced "you have come up with articulate, intelligent and workable solutions to our global issues"

I thought you *did *give a personal example to illustrate your point when you said you'd actually changed topics bc of what LM had said and the urgency of the message.
